OFFENES ATELIER – SOUNDSCAPE
The sounds and acoustic characteristics of the town were the focus of the sound art workshop “Soundscape Lauenburg”, which took place on the brownfield site from June 30 to July 5, 2020. For over a week, sounds and noises were explored, collected together, and then transformed into a collaborative sound sculpture. The artistic and craft implementation, carried out by enthusiastic participants of various ages, was overseen by Benjamin Stumpf (Offenes Atelier Künstlerhaus) and Fritjof Mangerich (Fellow Künstlerhaus 2020). The vibrating construction now invites people to listen, feel, discover and linger, and will continue to change in an ongoing development process with input from local residents.

OFFENES ATELIER (OPEN STUDIO)
In 2017, the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg successfully established a new initiative for art and cultural education: the “Offenes Atelier”. The main goals are: to co-operate with various local and national institutions, associations, schools, universities and art colleges; and to engage in dialogue with the residents of Lauenburg.
With the collaboration of Benjamin Stumpf, current and former Fellows and other artists, various workshops regularly take place; the overall theme changes from year to year. Benjamin Stumpf has worked as a cultural mediator for the state of Schleswig-Holstein since 2015.
From autumn 2021 onwards, the Offenes Atelier will be located in the new premises of the Stadtgalerie Künstlerhaus Lauenburg.
CITY IN TRANSITION
Annual theme 2020-21: “City in transition”.
In 2020-21, the Offenes Atelier will focus on the artistic aspect of urban development and opportunities for citizen participation. Since 2017, Lauenburg’s Neustadt (“upper town”) has been undergoing structural change; a new concept for the inner city core is currently being drawn up, with the aim of revitalising this part of the town, re-letting empty shops and creating a new town centre. In addition, various investors have recognised the town’s development potential, lying as it does within easy reach of Hamburg. As a result, major changes and new challenges for the town, the townscape and the social fabric are on the horizon. By means of workshops, panel discussions, artistic/acoustic installations and various themed events, the Offenes Atelier aims to accompany this transformation process and create awareness of the fact that urban development that is suitable for everyday life, seeks to improve people’s quality of life, and is sustainable, can only succeed with the involvement of the residents. What kind of town do they want, and how can they be involved in planning processes? What criteria are used as a basis for urban planning: economic, social or ecological? What possibilities do artistic or interdisciplinary approaches open up for innovative thinking about the urban environment? In an exchange with the Office for Urban Development, residents and interested people of all ages as well as artists and the residential Fellows, needs and visions for the future of Lauenburg will be discussed, and innovative methods for citizen participation will be put to the test. The key concepts are communication, participation and initiative. For this purpose, the artist collective “Baltic Raw Org” has been temporarily using the undeveloped land on Berliner Straße since spring 2020. This satellite location of the Künstlerhaus in the public domain lends itself to a trial-and-error approach. As many local initiatives and networks as possible are to be involved in its use, so that a fruitful exchange can develop.
